President’s Day?

What is this servile bureaucratic beast called “Presidents’ Day?”

We are Americans, not subjects of some tin pot Austro-Hungarian principality or fly-by-the-desert-winds Mideast sheikdom! We Americans owe no allegiance whatever to the “presidency,” which is nothing more than the top bureaucratic post of the federal government. When I grew up, we celebrated George Washington’s birthday, and rightly so, he was the father of our country. Later we lumped in Abraham Lincoln, who saved the Union, though I seem to remember my Texan forbearer, born 1881 on the last of the frontiers, growling, “They were men, not gods!”

Why have we allowed ourselves to become so obsequious? M’lord? M’lady? M’s-ck y--r bl--m-ng a-s? That fellow filing the office of the presidency is the custodian of the Constitution, no more. And hence our (the people’s) principal steward. On George Washington’s birthday, he, the President, should get on his knees and plead to the Lord God that he be worthy of us, the people, and become a truer and better steward of the Republic. Indeed, Presidents’ Day, should be abolished; Constitution Day, in its place, decreed.
