Led by three wrestlers from North Central, including AA-A Upper State champion Justin Witmore, five Kershaw County wrestlers will head to the two-day South Carolina High School League state individual championships which kick off Friday afternoon at the Anderson Civic Center.
Both Camden and Lugoff-Elgin have one wrestler headed for the event.
Witmore, a senior 170-pounder, went 4-0 at this past weekend’s AA-A Upper State championship tourney held at Liberty High School. Come this weekend, he hopes to join his older brother and NCHS graduate Daniel Witmore as a state champion.
In addition to Witmore, Jason Brazell’s Knights qualified freshman Mazon Gomez, who was third in the 113-pound division, and senior 220-pounder David Martin, who was fourth in his classification to the state championships.
In Camden last weekend, Josh Thomas finished second for the Bulldogs on his home mat in the AAA Upper State championships. Thomas, a state qualifier at 132 pounds last season for Joey Hendrix’s troops, improved to 38-6 on the season by going 3-1 on his home mat in the qualifier.
First-year L-E head coach Peter Hemingway will also carry one wrestler to Anderson in Chris Jackson, who took fourth in the 126-pound class in last weekend’s 4A Lower State championships in Beaufort. Jackson, a senior, finished fourth in the state at 120 pounds last year.
The wrestling begins in Anderson at 4 p.m. Friday with first round matches and will kick off again at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
