Gary earns PBC honor; nears FMU career points mark

CAMDEN'S EVRIK GARY is climbing toward the top of Francis Marion’s career points chart.

Former Camden High basketball standout and Francis Marion University graduate student Evrik Gary was honored on Monday as the Peach Belt Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 23.
In earning the PBC weekly honor, Gary averaged 31.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in two wins last week as the Patriots secured the fourth tournament berth in the PBC’s East Division.  The 6-foot-3, 155-pounder shot 50 percent from the floor, including 6-of-15 three-pointers, and was a near-perfect 23-of-25 at the foul line. He began the week with a 29-point outburst against Flagler College, and in the two contests played 72 of a possible 80 minutes. Gary currently leads the PBC in three-point field goal percentage and is second in the league in scoring.
On Tuesday night, Gary scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting in a 118-75 non-conference victory over Bluefield State College. In the process, Gary passed former FMU great Louis McCullough for second place on the Patriots' career scoring list with 1,719 points. Carlton Farr occupies first place with 1,863 points. Gary also moved into fourth place on the PBC all-time scoring list in the process.
Gary is 2009 graduate of Camden High School where he was an honor graduate and a South Carolina High School League Scholar Athlete. He helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2008-09 AAA state basketball championship while earning All-State and all-region honors in the process.
The Patriots close the regular season when they host Lander on Saturday afternoon in Florence at 3:30 p.m. start. FMU will then head into PBC tournament play which starts next week.
