Sunday alcohol sales

Kershaw County Council was scheduled last night to hold first reading on an ordinance which would allow Sunday alcohol sales in the county. Both the towns of Camden and Elgin have in past years changed their laws to allow Sunday sales, and businesses in unincorporated areas are now left at a disadvantage in not being able to match those sales.

Of course, alcohol sales in the state of South Carolina have a long and unusual history, going back to the time of liquor by the drink, which for years was banned across the entire state. Charleston always winked at the rule, so you had a situation in which a person could buy mixed drinks in one place but not another. The state finally changed that back in the 1970s, going to the mini-bottle; that was finally amended only a few years ago to allow big bottles to be used for mixed drinks.

A couple of decades ago, most stores weren't open on Sundays. Shopping was almost non-existent then except for necessity items. Gradually, that changed, and so did attitudes about selling alcohol on Sundays. The state has gone through some arcane measures regarding Sunday sales, but the time has come for merchants in the county to be allowed such transactions.
