After having opened the season by playing in a pair of tournaments, the Lugoff-Elgin girls’ soccer team kicked off the regular season in style by pasting visiting South Florence, 7-0, in a non-region match played Monday at Lugoff-Elgin Stadium.
Second-year head coach Carl Spoto’s squad received a hat trick from junior Taylor Wise along with two goals from freshman Gracie Hill while sophomores Whitney Osborne and Alexis Simonsen found the back of the nets one time each in the rout.
The seven goals were more than enough support for sophomore netminder Dena Stanley, who recorded eight saves in posting her third shutout of the season for the 4-4 winners.
The Lady Demons finish third in their own L-E Kickoff Classic with a 3-0 victory over Andrew Jackson in the third-place contest. Stanley, again, held the Lady Volunteers scoreless in the match.
Hill, Wise and sophomore Bailey Lewter each scored a goal in the victory.
Earlier in the tournament, L-E lost to eventual champion Lancaster, 2-1, with Hill scoring the lone goal for the hostesses which lost to Indian Land, 1-0.
Spoto and company began their tournament run by splitting four games in the Lady Blue Devil Classic hosted by Dreher.
The Lady Demons upended Sumter, 4-0, with Stanley finishing with a clean stat sheet in getting the shutout. Lewter had a pair of goals in the victory with sophomore Katie Hoffman and junior Katie Kelly adding one each.
L-E then doubled up Gilbert, 2-1, with Lewter’s leg being responsible for both goals for the winners.
The Lady Demons fell to Dreher, 2-0, in their third game before losing to the tournament hostesses by an identical 2-0 count in the championship match to come home in second place.
In a new tradition started this year, the players vote for a player of the week. Brianna Weems, who plays defense, earned the honor for the week of Feb. 24 - March 1 while Stanley was accorded the honor for the week of March 3 - 9.
The Lady Demons host Rock Hill tonight in a 6 p.m., non-conference match.
