In a season-opening battle between a pair of 2013 state tennis qualifiers, the 4A entry eased past the squad which made its first appearance in the post-season.
Winning every match in straight sets, Lugoff-Elgin handed visiting North Central a 7-0 loss in Tuesday’s season opener, spoiling the debut of first-year Knights’ head coach Chelsea Sutusky.
The Demons, which finished third in Region 4-4A a season ago did not lose a game in either first or second singles against the defending Region 3-AA champions as sophomore Hunter Horton won his first singles pairing, 6-0, 6-0, a score repeated by senior Hunter Johnson at second singles.
L-E seniors Nathan Tyson and James Carraway then won by a pair of 6-1 scores at third and fourth singles, respectively, before Justin Tillman won, 6-0, 6-0, to close out singles action.
In first doubles, Horton and Johnson won in an 8-2 pro set while the Demons’ second tandem of eighth-graders Levi Benggio and Matthew Mills won by default.
The fast start was exactly what L-E head coach Edward Rickwood was looking for to open what the Demons hope will be another successful season.
“Last year we finished in third place in our region,” Rickwood said. “This year, we are expecting the same, or better, results.”
