Demon netters upend Monarchs

HUNTER HORTON HAS YET to lose a game in helping L-E to a 2-0 start to the season.

Rolling to four wins in singles and sweeping both doubles matches, the Lugoff-Elgin tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Manning on Thursday on the L-E courts.
Sophomore first singles player Hunter Horton led the Demons as he posted a pair of 6-0 shutouts. Senior second singles player Hunter Johnson had a rough patch in his first set, winning 7-6 (7-5) only to breezed to a 6-0 win for the sweep. In third singles, senior Nathan Tyson breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
After suffering a setback at fourth singles, Edward Rickwood’s charges used a 6-0, 6-2 thumping by senior Justin Tillman at number five to close singles with four wins.
In doubles action, Horton and Johnson combined to take their first singles pairing, 8-1, in a pro set. The Demons’ second tandem played their first match of the season with senior Chance Sheorn and Levi Benggio, an eighth-grader at Stover Middle School making his high school tennis debut, outlasting their Monarch foes 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
This week, the Demons will begin Region 4-4A action, first, however, is a Monday home non-conference pairing with Lancaster. On Tuesday and Thursday, L-E will face league foes Spring Valley and Blythewood, both on the road. All three matches are scheduled for 5 p.m. starts.
