Before they ever stepped on the field to begin practice for their first season, the River Bluff boys’ soccer team was already ranked first in the AAA state soccer poll.
The Gators did little to hurt their stay atop the poll with a 6-0 win over host Camden last Friday night at Zemp Stadium.
The loss was the third in as many outings for the Bulldogs which slipped to 0-2 in Region 4-AAA play.
The visitors scored three goals in each half to come away with the shutout. “We actually played pretty well, despite what the scoreboard might say,” said CHS head coach Mark Chickering.
The Gators scored their first three goals in a span of 20 minutes, starting with a 30-yard blast in the 16th minute of play. With less than five minutes remaining in the opening half, the hosts found themselves trailing, 3-0.
RB scored goals four and five when the Dogs could not clear following a Gator corner kick. The visitors closed the scoring on a penalty kick in the final five minutes of play.
“It was another tough loss,” Chickering said following the setback. “They are great team and well-coached.  They were very fast and put a lot of pressure on our defense.  They were really good at shooting from distance and it showed on those first two goals.”
Chickering said the River Bluff defense was able to keep the Dogs in check as shots on goal were few and far between for the hosts.
“We were not really able to mount much of an offense, unfortunately, which made our defense look bad,” he said. “I’m proud of how hard the kids played and never gave up.  We did lose our composure a little bit late in the match, but, maybe it’s from getting off to a rough start. Hopefully, we can put it past us and move forward.”
Following Tuesday’s match at Dreher, the Dogs will return home to take on Westwood Friday in a 7 p.m. start at Zemp Stadium.
