On the day before St. Patrick’s Day, it was lucky to have been a horse which was developed in Camden as two graduates of Kip Elser’s Kirkwood Stables and another from Donna Freyer’s Custom Care Equine found their way into the winners’ circle.
The Kirkwood-developed Spartiatis, a 4-year-old gelding trained by Leon Blusiewicz, broke its maiden with a three-length victory in a $60,000 maiden special weight race at Aqueduct. The winner had Carlos Marquez Jr. in the irons.
In six lifetime starts, Spartiatis has a win and a second and $56,804 in earnings.
On that same day at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas, Kirkwood grad Dancin Lil, trained by Danny Caldwell, won for the fifth time in 21 lifetime starts with a score in a $62,000 allowance race. David Mello was up for the win which came by a comfortable 4 ¾-lengths.
The victory was the second in a row and third in four starts for the 5-year-old Fusaichi Pegasus mare which has earned $140,793.
Not to be outdone on Sunday was former CCE resident Image of Anna. The 3-year-old Elkstone Group LLC-owned filly broker her maiden at third asking by winning A $65,000 maiden special weight by a whopping 7 ¾-lengths for trainer Richard Violette, who gave Irad Ortiz Jr. a leg up.
In three career starts, Image of Anna has bankrolled $42,467.
On Friday, March 14, the CCE-developed Sir Leslie won for the third time in 18 career starts with a 1 ¾-length score in a $52,000 allowance race at Aqueduct for trainer Phillip Serpe. The 4-year-old Stonerside gelding padded its bankroll to $90,862.
Kirkwood’s Elaine Kowaleski broke her maiden in her second start on March 9 at the Fairgrounds in New Orleans. The 3-year-old filly is trained by Steve Margolis and had Ashley Broussard on board for the victory in the $41,000 race.
On March 8, Toasting, a 4-year-old West Point Thoroughbreds filly which was developed at Kirkwood, won a $58,500 allowance race at Gulfstream Park for trainer Thomas Albertrani. Dylan Davis was aboard for the 3/4-length victory.
A graded stakes-placed and stakes-winning filly has four wins, two seconds and five thirds in a 16-race career in which she has earned $436,450.
