The filing period for those people wishing to run for countywide elected offices opened Monday and will run through Sunday, March 30. Kershaw County Director of Registration and Elections Rosalind Watson said her office will be open normal hours through March 28 and will also be open from 8 a.m. until noon March 29 and 30.

According to Watson, several positions will be on the ballot, including sheriff; coroner; Kershaw County Council seats 4, 5, 6 and council chair; Kershaw County Board of School Trustees seats 2, 4, 6 and 8; probate judge; auditor; and treasurer. In addition, the position of 5th Circuit Solicitor, which prosecutes cases in both Kershaw and Richland counties, will also be on the ballot. Some positions, such as sheriff and coroner, require certain professional criteria to be considered.

The Democratic and Republican primaries will both be held June 10. Any primary runoffs will be held June 24.

Camden Clerk of Council Brenda Davis said two Camden City Council seats, currently held by councilmen Walter Long and X. Willard Polk, are up for election this year. Davis said the filing period ends July 15 and that each candidate wishing to be on the ballot must turn in a petition containing the signatures of 5 percent of the city’s registered voters by the deadline.

City voters will go to the polls on Election Day, Nov. 4.

The Chronicle-Independent will report on the complete list of county candidates after the filing period closes.
