Thursday, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Charlotte Thompson Fire Department (CTFD), located at 746 St. Matthews Road in Camden, will hold its 56th annual barbecue. All plates are $8 each and profits benefit the volunteer fire department and the community center. The event is an opportunity for friends and neighbors to eat together at the community center. Take-out is also available.

The CTFD has eight volunteers the service the area and each volunteer also has a full time job. The CTFD has made many much-needed improvements to the community center over the years, including a new roof on the center and the pit and a heating and cooling system. The community center is also available for public rent.

The firemen and gentlemen of the community cook the meat all night. They start cooking the day before and slowly cook using a recipe handed down from the first cooks many years ago. Ladies prepare the wonderful desserts and serve the food on the night of the event.

The community is made up of members who have lived here all their lives along with second and third generations. It also has many new members that are vital and appreciated.

The following poem was written by Jean Davis who was born and raised in her family home and has raised her family her as well:

Twas the day before the barbecue, and all through Camden Town

Not a single one of those good cooks from Charlotte Thompson could be found.

That’s because the men were at the pit, watching the chicken and hams bake.

The women were in their kitchens, making homemade pies and cakes.

So come on down to Charlotte Thompson Community Center this Thursday night.

The food, fun and fellowship will be an awesome sight!
