While it may have required their putting in some overtime, you will not hear the Lugoff-Elgin softball team complaining.
The Lady Demons kicked off Region 4-4A play on Tuesday with a 6-4, nine-inning win over host Spring Valley.
Junior Erin Blizzard earned her sixth win in seven mound decisions for James Marlow’s charges. The right-hander went the full nine innings, allowing one earned run while scattering seven hits and fanning 10 Lady Vikings on the evening.
Freshman Baleigh Lunsford led a balanced L-E offensive attack with three hits while driving in a run. Senior catcher Taylor Rawl went 2-for-3 while scoring a run and stealing a base while senior Delaney Guerrero had a hit, stole a base and scored twice.
The victory gave the Lady Demons a 7-1 overall record on the regular season.
Last Friday, the L-E girls traveled to Lexington to play in the two-day Lady Wildcat First Pitch Classic at the Pine Grove Softball Complex in West Columbia. The Lady Demons won their pool with a 3-0 record following a 9-0 win over Ashley Ridge on Friday night before beating White Knoll (8-4) and Laurens (10-3) on Saturday.
Lugoff-Elgin lost to North Davidson (N.C.), 9-6, in bracket play, but came back and beat Fort Mill in the third place game, 10-4, to finish 4-1.
Blizzard went 3-1 on the mound for the weekend as she pitched 28 innings, allowed seven earned runs while striking out 21.
Rawl led the L-E offense as she batted at a .500 clip (9-18) with a home run, two doubles and five RBI. She also scored seven runs, walked four times and stole two bases. Lunsford went 9-for-19 in the five games with a triple, five RBI, six runs scored, three walks and a pair of stolen bases. She also pitched five innings and was the winning pitcher in the White Knoll game.
