Sweeping up in singles, the Lugoff-Elgin tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in Region  4-4A competition with a 6-1 victory over visiting Blythewood on Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore Hunter Horton got the ball rolling for Edward Rickwood’s charges with a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles. Senior Hunter Johnson dropped his first set, 3-6, only to rally back for a 6-1 win in the second before taking the match in a tie-breaker, 10-3.
L-E’s Nathan Tyson was also extended to a third set tie-breaker. After a 6-2 win in the first set, Tyson lost the second, 4-6, but had enough left in the tank to take the tie-breaker, 10-6. Things were not as nerve-wracking in fourth and fifth singles as well as in first doubles as the Demons breezed to victory in straight sets.
James Carraway had little problem in fourth singles in blanking his opponent by identical 6-0 scores. Justin Tillman lost just two games in fifth singles, winning 6-0, 6-2, before Horton and Johnson combined for an 8-1 pro set win at first singles.
The lone setback for the Demons came at second doubles as Chance Sheorn and Levi Benggio gave a valiant effort only to come out on the short end of a 7-6, 4-6, 8-10.
L-E will look to add three more victories this week as the Demons travel to Lancaster this afternoon, in a non-region pairing, before going to Region 4 foe Richland Northeast on Tuesday and hosting league rival Irmo on Thursday afternoon.
