With their bats dormant for five frames, North Central exploded for nine runs in the top of the sixth and escaped from Eau Claire with a 9-3 victory in a Region 3-AA baseball game played in Columbia on Friday night.
The victory was the second in three conference games for the Knights who were tripped up by Pelion on Tuesday, 5-2.
NC head coach Robbie Cash said his team’s come-from-behind win kept them where they need to be in league play.
“We could not afford to start 1-2 in our region,” he said. “Credit our guys for digging deep when they needed to and coming through with that one big inning on a night which, until that point, we struggled to get anything going.”
That Shamrocks provided starting pitcher Wallace Green with a run in the second and two more in the home half of the fifth as the Shamrocks broke to a 3-0 lead which looked more than safe heading into top of the sixth.
But the roof caved in on the Rocks as the Knights’ bats caught fire to the tune of nine runs.
Broderick Gaither had a pair of NC’s seven hits as the guests took advantage of walks and three EC errors to get the win. John Bowers had a pair of RBI in the sixth while Cam Holley drove in another run.
Green went the distance for the hosts and fanned 11 batters.
Tyler Bowers picked up the win for the Knights as the sophomore went 3.1 innings in relief of starter Paul Blackwell. Bowers fanned 10 Shamrocks to go along with six strikeouts from Blackwell.
