Park go-ahead given

Kershaw County councilmen have instructed Recreation Director Doyle Allen to proceed with attempts to raise money for a park to be built on the Fair Street property formerly occupied by the old Camden hospital.

The park is to be named Baruch-Burdell Memorial Park in honor of Bernard Baruch and John Burdell who donated land and money for the original hospital.

As planned, it will include a variety of things, including tennis courts, rose gardens and an amphitheater….

Troop 44, Cadette Girl Scouts, have had a busy, busy year!

Cadette Girl Scouts are girls in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. These girls are told in their handbooks that Cadette Scouting is a way of living up to the best of your abilities. It is a way of making the most of you, as you are now and as the person you would like to be.

 Cadette Troop 44 has been having an active year.... Last fall the girls enjoyed a hike and cookout….During the Christmas holidays…the girls worked at the Child Care Center….During January…enjoyed the old craft of dipping candles…found out that pioneer women had it rough….February...planning their cookie sales….The girls also traveled to Irmo…spent an entire Saturday with other Cadettes from Congaree Council, …learned skills and crafts in small groups….needlepoint, fashion, creative dancing, gymnastics, ceramics, and leather craft.

 …celebrated Thinking Day with an “International Supper”….a day that is set aside by Girl Scouts to think of other girl Scouts around the world. All over the world, the slogan is the same: “Do a good turn daily.” And all over the world the motto is the same: “Be prepared.”

 …Members of Troop 44...Vickie Chase, Christina Horton, Janet Harrelson, Wanda Gaskins, Karen Goforth, and their leader is Mrs. Bob Corley.

On the college scene …

 Trey Lott, a rising senior majoring in pre-medicine at the University of South Carolina, has been elected vice-president of the USC Student Body…

 Trey has been the Gamecock mascot all year….

 Martha Camp, a freshman business administration major, has been elected vice-president of the sophomore class for 1975-76 at Columbia College….

Columbia College, a liberal arts college for women, offers over two hundred leadership positions, all filled by women….

Youngest bowler wins youth tourney

Saturday, March 22, the Singles Bowling Tournament was held for boys and girls ages 8-12 at the Rowlarena.

Velma Hinson, the youngest bowler in the league, was the first place winner with a 518 including handicap….

Pig tails and curls to invade boys’ baseball

Old traditions die hard, or is it new traditions aren’t born easily.

Whatever, depending on the side of the fence you stand, ERA’ers can rejoice while staunch men are men and women are women’ers can pout -- since Saturday morning baseball traditions changed in Camden when pigtailed 12-year-old Robin Pursely signed up for the boys’ Dixie Youth baseball team.

Robin…is already a noted girls’ basketball player in the county, a leading scorer for the Shooting Stars of Lugoff as well as trophy winning in semi-professional motorcycle racing.

… “I just don’t like playing with a bunch of girls. They’re soft and don’t play hard and pitch under handed. I like a lot of action. I want them to treat me just like one of the crowd.”

…Robin added she felt lots of girls would like to sign up for the boys’ team but are scared…. “Now that someone has done it the others can. I suggest if they want to play, they should go ahead and sign up and don’t be scared.”

Today it’s Dixie Youth, tomorrow the ….
