Having an ace up their sleeve, the Lugoff-Elgin tennis team was able to lay that card on the table in a 4-2 loss to host Lancaster in a non-conference boys’ tennis match played on Monday afternoon.
The Demons received straight set victories from Hunter Horton and Hunter Johnson, who are both unbeaten at first and second singles, respectively. But the guests were unable to get the pair back on the court for a first doubles match which would have decided the outcome.
“Our number one and number two (singles players) continue to be dominant,” said L-E head coach Edward Rickwood following his team’s second loss in five outings. “But we were unable to get that all important third victory to put our chance to win on the racquets of our number one doubles team.”
Horton took care of business rather quickly with a pair of 6-0 wins at first singles. Johnson had a tougher time as he fell behind in the first set, 5-2, only to win 7-5, 6-4.
In third singles, L-E’s Nathan Tyson fought to the end, only to come out on the short end of a 4-6, 6-4, 5-10 loss. Lancaster would win at fourth singles as James Carraway fell, 6-2, 6-0.
The second third set tie-breaker came in fifth singles as L-E’s Justin Tillman and his opponent hooked up in a two-hour, back-and-forth marathon only to see the Bruins take the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 victory in a match which had all eye glued to it after the third singles pairing was in the books.
The hosts also won at second doubles as they held off the Demon duo of Chance Sheorn and Levi Benggio, 6-4, 6-1.
