The city of Camden is recognizing April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month by encouraging all Camden residents to be careful and mindful of others while they’re on the road. City officials read a proclamation during Camden City Council’s meeting Tuesday.

National Distracted Driving Awareness Month is sponsored by the National Safety Council and encourages drivers to not use cell phones while driving for calls or other purposes and to warn others about the dangers of distracted driving. Thousands of people die on the roads every year as a result of distracted driving, according to the NSC.

The city of Camden has already taken steps to protect drivers. In March 2010, council passed an ordinance banning drivers from sending or reading text messages or emails. Since the ordinance went into effect, instances of distracted driving-related accidents in the city have decreased 6 percent, according to the Camden Police Department.

The city recently produced a video giving an overview of the ordinance, why it was passed and why city officials think it is a good idea.

According to

• The likelihood you’ll cause a crash is 23 times higher when you’re distracted while driving;

• Forty-nine percent of drivers age 21-24 send texts messages and emails while driving;

• If you’re traveling at 55 miles per hour, sending or receiving a text message takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving the length of a football field blind.
