Carolina Cup

Weather forecasters -- a notoriously inaccurate lot -- did everything they could to dump a bucket of cold water on last Saturday’s Carolina Cup, but despite their dire predictions, thousands of people turned out to the Springdale Race Course and enjoyed a terrific afternoon of horse racing and socializing, all topped off by a local horse winning the featured Carolina Cup race. We were reminded once again of all that the event means to this area and how much it burnishes the reputation of Camden.

Race director Jeff Teeter and his staff did their usual commendable job in setting up a day of activities with something for everyone. Things ran smoothly -- no mean feat when that many people descend on a particular area -- and there were smiles all around when Top Striker, owned by Camden’s Sue Sensor, outdistanced the field for a convincing victory in the Carolina Cup, the top race of the day. Arch Kingsley trained the horse right here in Camden, and jockey Willie McCarthy gave the ‘chaser his reins as he dashed to an 11.5-length victory.

The Cup attracts people from throughout the Southeast, and it brings hordes of former Camdenites back to town to reunite with old friends. Many of us who live here sometimes take it for granted, but the Carolina Cup is a premier event that helps Camden keep its reputation as a top-flight place to live and visit. We tip our hat to all those involved, and now we start counting down the days until the 2015 race.
