Kershaw County School District (KCSD) schools and offices will be closed yet again Wednesday due to the effects of freezing temperatures. KCSD Communications Director Mary Anne Byrd sent the following statement to the media mid-afternoon Tuesday:

Due to temperatures predicted to be below freezing overnight along with a great deal of ice still present on Kershaw County roadways, all Kershaw County School District schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 12. All Wednesday athletic events and extra-curricular activities and school and district-related meetings are also canceled.

“We have appreciated the cooperation of employees and parents as we have had to make decisions about closing our schools and offices during the past few days of inclement weather,” said Superintendent Frank Morgan. “In our case, we have to consider the safety of buses that must travel on rural roads, particularly in the northern part of our county, as well as clearing out over 20 parking lots of schools and offices. The safety of more than 10,000 students and over 800 employees is always our highest priority.”

Morgan said that school district officials have been working closely with county emergency preparedness officials during this time and have also been out looking at roads and school campuses today. He said that school district maintenance staff and Kershaw County officials have been working diligently to clear parking lots and sidewalks today and will continue work tomorrow.

School district administrators will continue to monitor weather conditions and will use the school district’s automated telephone system, the district website and local media to keep the public informed.
