On the heels  of Camden’s grandest event, last Saturday’s Carolina Cup, the eyes of the county’s equine set will be cast a few miles east to the South Carolina Equine Park (SCEP) for a more cent, but another annual rite of spring, the Camden Spring Classic Horse Show.
The four-day event, which opened on Thursday, will be highlighted by Saturday evening’s $15,000 United States Hunter Jumper Association International Hunter Challenge Derby Classic to be contested under the lights inside the Bonham Oval at the facility located on Cleveland School Rd.
All events throughout the weekend, including the $15,000 Derby Classic, are free and open to the public.
The Camden Spring Classic kicks off the 2014 Carolina Spring Circuit. The SCHJA Benefit Show will be held April 10-13, also at SCEP.  The next two weeks, April 15-19 and April 23-27, will be held at Highfields Event Center in Aiken.
The Camden Spring Classic provides the perfect stopping point for the show jumpers from their winter spent in Florida to heading north for the summer events. This week’s event, piggybacking on the Carolina Cup, provides businesses in Kershaw County with another early spring stretch in which guests are plentiful as hotels are filled and area restaurants can expect an uptick in business.
In addition to the feature event of the weekend, the $15,000 Derby Classic on Saturday, there will be a $2,500 USHJA National Derby which will follow in the Bonham oval following the completion of the main competition.
Events usually begin at 8 a.m. each and continue through the mid-to-late afternoons, save for Saturday when the show goes into the evening.
Spectators are invited to sit on the hill which overlooks the show rings while bringing a tailgate spread with them as they take in the action inside the rings.
The South Carolina Equine Park is located along Cleveland School Road in Camden. To get to the site, take I-20 east to exit 101. You will then bear right off the exit and take a left onto Cleveland School Road. There will be a sign directing you to the facility.
