Four Kershaw County fire departments battled a blaze at a Cassatt lumber company Tuesday night. Kershaw County Fire Marshall Gene Faulkenberry said the call came in around 8:30 p.m. on the fire at Canfor Southern Pine -- commonly known by its former name as New South -- on Sanders Creek Road.

“It was a hopper on fire in the rear of the plant,” Faulkenberry said. “Camden sent a ladder truck and Shepherd, Antioch and Cassatt departments also responded. They got the fire extinguished and were there about four hours.”

Faulkenberry said it appeared sawdust stored in the hopper spontaneously combusted.

“It doesn’t happen much, but when it does, it’s really something,” he said.

Joe Redfearn, Canfor regional human resources coordinator, said workers were at the mill but none were injured. He said the fire was contained to a small area and there was not much damage, thanks to quick action by the fire departments.

“We had a fire in our planer mill bag house that keeps dust from getting in the air,” Redfearn said. “There was really good response by the fire departments and the damage was minimal.
