What companies look for

An article in your March 28 edition covered (Ben) Connell’s entry into the Kershaw County Council chairmanship race. He seems like a respectable, capable and credible young man. However, I would like to reflect on a statement credited to him in the article. He supposedly said premium recreation areas attract industries and the professionals who operate them. Further, these young professionals would be drawn to the area because you have something for their kids to do.

I have no intention of downplaying the importance of recreation and necessary facilities. My viewpoint, however, is to give it the proper prioritized perspective.

I served 35 years in the industry in a managerial position. I know a little bit about how decisions are made regarding relocation or relocation.

A company looks at the following considerations:

• Available property expansive enough for current needs and future expansion if desired, at an attractive price.

• An atmosphere of and history of reasonable taxation, with a welcoming attitude toward industry.

• A population of sufficient numbers to provide an adequate trainable workforce.

• A local and state government willing and able to provide access and egress to major shipping routes.

After those considerations, come lesser ones such as consideration of recreation for the employees’ kids. I am on record as favoring (Gene) Hartis; beyond that, I wish Mr. Connell well.
