Camden rebounded from Thursdays’ 10-0 conference loss to A.C. Flora by shutting out Carolina Forest, 2-0, in Friday’s opening round of the Airport Select Invitational boys’ soccer tournament.
It was a landmark victory for Mark Chickering’s squad when it comes to this event.
“This is our third trip to the Airport Tourney and we had never won a match … not even tied one,” said the CHS head coach. “It's good to go into a quality tournament and get a win. We’ve been telling our guys that every team has to have an identity; we want to be known as a team that works hard. We did that in this match.”
Richard White posted the shutout for the Bulldogs and was named CHS’ man of the match.
“Richard came back after a tough performance against Flora and really shut them down,” Chickering said. “(CF) played keep away from us most of the first half and Richard made several great saves to keep us in it.”
The Dogs scored the only goal they needed in the 18th minute as Riley Kohn scored on a corner kick on a shot which he curled into the net as the ball soared over the head of the goalkeeper.
Camden received an insurance goal from Roberto Pena, who received a pass off a throw in and headed it past the keeper in the 48th minute.
“We played really well,” Chickering said following the win. “I’m happy for the boys because they really bounced back after getting hammered by Flora on Thursday. It was hot on Friday, our kids were cramping but they played their tails off.  It was a team effort, everyone worked hard. It’s nice to get a quality win over a good team.”
