What a way to head into the Easter vacation break.
Thursday’s 6-0 win over Blythewood capped a perfect 3-0 week of all shutout victories --- all coming against Region 4-4A foes --- for the Lugoff-Elgin tennis team which punched the Demons’ ticket into the 4A state playoffs for the third time in as many seasons.
The Demons will finish no worse than third in the conference.
While last week’s wins over Richland Northeast carried a little suspense with at least one of the matches being a nail-biter, such was not the case against Blythewood as Edward Rickwood’s charges won all six contests in straight sets starting with Hunter Horton breezing to a pair of 6-0 blankings in first singles.
Hunter Johnson won, 6-4, 6-2, in second singles before Nathan Tyson won, 6-0, 6-1, in third singles. Justin Tillman kept things going by taking down his fourth singles opponent, 6-1, 6-4, before James Carraway closed out single action by winning in easy fashion, 6-1, 6-0.
L-E’s second doubles tandem of Chance Sheorn and Matthew Mills completed the sweep by taking their match by identical 6-2 scores.
“Blythewood has good numbers, but has a very young team this year,” Rickwood said of the Bengals. “From what I saw (Thursday) night, they should experience some very good tennis in the coming years.”
The victory gave the Demons a 7-5 overall mark and a 5-3 record in Region 4-4A with six regular season matches left to be played, including a pair of conference contests.
