The Camden Fire Department (CFD) and the South Carolina Fire Marshal’s Office will present a joint community outreach program beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 24 in the Kirkwood community behind North Towne Square Shopping Center in Camden.

Called "Right Alarm. Right Location. Right Action," residents of the area can receive free smoke alarms equipped with a 10-year lithium battery, plus get advice on making a fire escape plan and other fire safety subjects. The program is funded by a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

Firefighters are spreading the word in the neighborhood by going door to door to visit with residents and leaving doorknob hangers with information at homes where the residents are away. If the homeowner will not be available Thursday, arrangements may be made to have a smoke alarm installed at another time.

Camden Fire Chief John Bowers said the purpose of the campaign is simple.

"The goal of this outreach program is to save lives. We ask residents to please check their smoke alarms to make sure they are working," he said. "If they have one that is more than 10 years old, it should be replaced. The chirp heard while testing means the battery works. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the sensor inside is still working after 10 years."

The State Fire Marshal’s Office of Community Risk Reduction will participate by joining the CFD in going through the neighborhood. Participants will wear highly-visible safety vests and will post signs with fire safety messages throughout the area.

"We are so happy to be in Camden to support this important program," State Fire Marshal Shane Ray said. "We applaud the Camden Fire Department for its proactive approach with outreach within the community. We look forward to meeting many Camden citizens during this time."
