Roger Smoak, the man whose name is synonymous with tennis in Camden, will be honored when the tennis courts at Camden High School are named after him in a 4 p.m. on-court ceremony on Monday, April 28 prior to the Bulldogs’ non-region match with visiting Hartsville.
The match itself will follow the ceremony,
The move to rename the courts was passed by a vote of the Kershaw County School Board of Trustees last month.
Smoak started as the head tennis coach in Camden in 1972 and since that time, he has led the boys’ program to 590 victories, the most in the history of the South Carolina High School League.
The highlight of his tenure, to this date, has been guiding the Bulldogs to the 1991 AAA state championship. In addition, his 2010 and 1989 teams were AAA Upper State champions while the 1978 Bulldogs played for the state title after having won the 4A Lower State crown.
Smoak’s victory total does not include his years coaching the Lady Bulldogs. During his tenure as head coach of the CHS girls, he led the team to the 1987 AAA Lower State championship and a berth in the state title match.
The ceremony is free and open to the public with all of Smoak’s former players, especially, being invited to attend.
