Looking no worse for the wear after having enjoyed an 11-day layoff, the Camden High girls’ soccer team returned to the pitch with a 2-1 win over Westwood Tuesday night in a Region 4-AAA match played in Blythewood.
Lady Bulldog senior Kayla Wallace got the scoring started when she beat Westwood’s goalkeeper on a shot to the back post.  Wallace’s shot was helped in large part due to the pass from midfielder Brooke Galdeen.
With Jordan and Shan Woody controlling the center midfield for much of the game, visitors received a second goal via a Riley Shelburne assist.  Shelburne’s cross to junior striker Breanna Barnes resulted in Barnes placing the ball into the back of the net to give Camden a 2-0 lead.
“We struggled to score, but we took a ton of shots,” said CHS head coach Stephen Sutusky. “I kind of expected to struggle a bit coming off a week-long layoff (spring break) and because we have some girls out for various reasons.”
The Camden defense kept the hosts out of the net until 13 minutes to play in the game when Westwood cut into the lead 2-1.
“We were able to play everyone and in a close game that’s not always possible,” Sutusky said. “It was good for all of our girls to get some game action and get prepared for the final stretch run.”
Sutusky praised the efforts of senior Savannah Locke, who handled the goalkeeping duties, while Sarah Anne Semple, Margeaux Laschanzky and Serena Hayes played well defensively to secure the win.
Camden will travel to Chapin next Tuesday before rounding out the week by visiting Lugoff-Elgin Thursday and hosting Lower Richland the next night to close out the season.
