Mayor McCorkle is candidate for re-election

Mayor Francis Nolan McCorkle formally announced Wednesday that he would be a candidate for re-election as Mayor of Camden in the city Democratic primary to be held Tuesday, May 25.  He will be seeking his sixth term as the city’s executive….

DuPont Company thanks Camden for its welcome

Expressing appreciation for the “generous welcome” given by the people of Camden, E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company, Inc., state in a page advertisement in this week’s issue of The Chronicle that “before we can begin to become the respected member of your community we want to be, we have a lot of work to do.”    

…The advertisement which is directed “To the People of Camden” says:

“Thanks for your generous welcome to this company.  We shall strive earnestly on the years to come, to live among you in the same spirit of friendliness you have shown us….”

Hospital wings designated as war memorial

At a meeting of the Kershaw County Memorial Commission Monday it was unanimously voted that funds be spent for additions and improvements by way of building, erecting, equipping and furnishing two proposed wings to the present Camden hospital as a memorial to the dead of World Wars I and II.

The resolution selecting the addition…was offered by Loring Davis of Bethune and seconded by Mrs. William L. Goodale.  Every member of the commission voted in favor of it….

Lasorda is lost to Camden Chiefs

Tommie Lasorda, idol of Camden baseball fans, outstanding pitcher and outfielder, is lost to the Chiefs for the 1948 season, according to late reports.

Lasorda who pitched last week and showed the stuff that made him the No. 1 player of the Palmetto league last season, was all set to wear the Chiefs garb this season, but on Saturday he received order from the Philadelphia Nationals, the major organization to which he belongs to report to the Wilmington, Del., club Monday, or else.

The “or else” also means that if he did not follow the professional club’s order, he would be out of organized baseball for the future.  Lasorda was torn between his love for Camden and a desire to play here and the imperative demand of the Philly officials.

It was also reported that Providence was so impressed with his pitching and hitting that they wanted to buy him outright from the Philly organization.

Bethune pupils get state awards

Loretta Newman, a pupil of the seventh grade of the Bethune school, has received the state award, giving by the Milton Bradley Company for the best wax crayon drawing in the annual “America The Beautiful” contest, conducted by the company.

Ikey Wayne, of Miss M. Arthur’s kindergarten school, received the state award in this group.

Teacher and sponsor of the contest was Mrs. R. K. Thompkins.

Loretta is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Estridge of the Timrod community and Ikey is the young son of Supt. A. C. Wayne of the Bethune schools.

Fred Tejan will return to Camden next polo season

Reports that “polo in Camden is all washed up”…which for half a century has been a magnet of attraction for many thousands of enthusiasts to Kirkwood field, was characterized as “ridiculous” and “without any foundation whatsoever” by Frank H. Heath, Camden publicist….
