Catholic men’s club to hear prison officer

Eugene H. Gaulin, President of the Men’s Club of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church announced the final meeting of the year until the fall season will be held tomorrow evening at St. Mary’s Hall….

Col. J. W. Jenkins, a veteran of World War II…the Korean War has served in the Southwest Pacific, the Philippines, Italy and the Mediterranean Area, and recently returned from a three year tour of duty in Alaska. He will speak on the organization of the penal system in South Carolina and the state’s rehabilitation program aimed at correction rather than punishment for prisoners…will also give a short talk on Alaska and…the recent earthquake in that state.

Betty Pate excels at SC tourney

Several lady bowlers from the Camden area made off with trophies and prize-money during the final weekend of the 4th Annual Handicap Tournament of the S.C. Women’s Bowling Association, held at the “Strike and Spare Lanes” in North Augusta last week.

Betty Pate, McRae Road, bowled the highest scratch game in the entire tournament, with a score of 248, to win a silver engraved tray for her efforts….

Mrs. West honored at luncheon in NYC

Mrs. Mattie R. West, Geno Farm, Black River Road, will be honored as South Carolina “Mother of the Year” in New York on Friday, May 8. She will be one of 50 honored guests at the Waldorf – Astoria in a luncheon ceremony that is a major annual event there.

Upon her return home she will find awaiting her an American flag that she is urged to display on Mother’s Day (May 10) a day designated by Congress in 1914 as a national flag day. The flags are presented by The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company at the request of the American Mothers Committee.

Robert Sheheen is named to Duke fraternity

Robert Joseph Sheheen of Camden is one of 16 rising seniors of the Men’s College of Duke University named to Omicron Delta Kappa, national senior men’s leadership fraternity.

Selection is based on outstanding character, service and leadership in campus activities. ODK works to promote better understanding between the student body and the faculty.

Sheheen, a Dean’s list student and chairman of the Student Union Board of Governors, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Sheheen, Sr., 169 Chesnut Street.

Polio vaccine is available

All three types of Sabin polio vaccine are still available at the Kershaw County Health Dept. and citizens who missed their doses at the recent series of “Polio Sundays” are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to get their immunization from polio.

I. E. Shiver gets trip to World’s Fair

Irving E. Shiver, Rt. 1, Box 107, Camden will attend the New York World’s Fair early this year as a guest of Ford Motor Company.

The 3-day, 2-night expense paid trip to the Fair is offered by Ford Motor Company to every retail buyer of a new Ford 6000 tractor during the period of December 16, 1963, through May 31, 1964. The offer applies only to Ford’s 6000 tractor.

Mr. Shiver will travel by air to New York City to join a large group of other Ford 6000 tractor owners. The trip will include two nights at a Central Park hotel, all meals in New York at a choice of deluxe restaurants, a guided tour of New York City, sight-seeing at the Fair and other special events such as the Monorail ride, the Ice - Travaganza Show and V.I.P. treatment at the Ford Pavilion.
