With no score worse than an 80, the Lugoff-Elgin golf team finished tied for fourth in Monday’s 4A Upper State Golf Championship played over the Willow Creek Golf Course in Greer.
The Demons fired a 303 for the 18-hole event, tying them with Riverside. Boiling Springs led the way with a 296 followed by Hillcrest (297) with Gaffney rounding out the top three with a 300.
Mike Robinson’s charges will play in the 54-hole 4A state championship tournament to be played at the Furman University Golf course on Monday and Tuesday, May 19-20. The qualifying teams will play 36 holes on the first day of the tournament and 18 on day two in order to determine a state champion.
In the Upper State tournament, junior Trevor Johnston led the Demons with a 72 while fellow junior Brandon Hill fired a 75. Auburn-bound senior Kelli Murphy was next with a 77 while Erskine signee Chandler Walters shot a 79. Junior Ty Morgan recorded an 80 for his round.
L-E came into the Greer event after having finished second in last week’s Region 4-4A championship tournament played over the Woodlands Country Club in Columbia. In that 18-hole event, Murphy led the team with a 75 while Johnston was next with a 79. Both earned all-conference honors with their play.

Hicks qualifies for 3A state championship: Camden High School junior Will Hicks punched his ticket into the 3A state golf championships by shooting a 75 at Monday’s 3A Upper State tournament played over the Timberlake Golf Club in Chapin.
While the Bulldogs did not qualify for the state championships as a team, Hicks will play in the May 19-20 3A state championships at the Members Club at Wildewood as an individual and will compete for a state championship.
