A Lancaster County man is behind bars in Kershaw County, charged with two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under the age of 11. Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies arrested Grant Adam Helms Jr., 24, of Old Camden Road in the town of Kershaw. Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said in a statement released to the press that Helms turned himself in on April 8 and admitted his actions.

Helms is accused of allegedly sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl twice within a 24-hour period. The incidents allegedly took place inside Kershaw County, according to a KCSO press release. Investigators learned of the assaults earlier this year and a forensic specialist was brought in to interview the girl.

Deputies took Helms to the Kershaw County Detention Center (KCDC) where a magistrate set bond at $50,000 with the added requirement that he wear an electronic monitoring device and have no contact with the victim or her family should he be released prior to trial. Online KCDC records indicated Helms as still in custody Tuesday afternoon.

“These types of cases against young children are especially disturbing and occur all too frequently,” Matthews said in the press release. “I suspect that more of these types of assaults take place than are reported. We will thoroughly investigate these cases, determine if the allegations are true and proceed with an arrest if appropriate. Unfortunately, the emotional scars left with these young victims will follow them the rest of their lives. I am glad we were able to take this man off the street.”
