Certified Water Aerobics Instructor Christina Andrade will teach a water aerobics class at the Kershaw County Aquatic Center beginning June 2 and running through the end of September. The class is $45 per month or $15 per week and is open to males and females, aged 18 and above. Classes will not be prorated daily.

Andrade has been teaching the class through the Kershaw County Recreation Department for seven years. She said her goal is to eventually become a master trainer. "I specialize in movement disorders," Andrade said, explaining that she works closely with individuals who suffer from arthritis, Parkinson’s disease and o

ther disorders. She said that water aerobics classes often present a way for these individuals to find relief.

The class is open to all people, even those who aren’t able to swim, Andrade said. "The ages of my participants varies greatly," she said. She added that she sees all levels of physical fitness in her classes. "Some people are physically fit and some come to lose weight." Even for those looking to increase muscle tone, the class serves as a helping hand, Andrade said.

She also has seen students come to the class on medication for pain management and said, "I’ve seen people get taken off their meds after doing the class. An aquatic class is more buoyant for the body’s joints. You can do more than you can on the ground." Also, the water provides added resistance which is beneficial in building, toning and strengthening muscles, Andrade said.

The class is held from 7:55 a.m. to 8:55 a.m., switching to 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with the start of school. To get more information, call the recreation department at 425-6009. To pre-register, visit the recreation department office at 1042 W. Dekalb St. in Camden.
