L-E's Blizzard, NC's Bowers earn all-state honors

Lugoff-Elgin pitcher Erin Blizzard and North Central High School third baseman Tyler Bowers were named to the 4A softball and 2A baseball All-State teams, respectively.
Following what was one of the most successful seasons in the history of the Lugoff-Elgin softball program, members of the Lady Demons hauled in postseason laurels.
James Marlow’s troops, which advanced to the finals of the district tournament before falling to Hillcrest in the title game, were ranked ninth in the final state 4A poll.
Individually, five Lady Demons were lauded for their performances including Blizzard, who was named to the 4A All-State Softball team after posting a 19-5 record with four shutouts this past season. The junior right-hander threw 163 innings, allowing 112 hits while fanning 164 batters. She finished the season with a 1.12 earned run average.
Blizzard was also one of five L-E players who earned All-Region 4-4A honors. She was joined on the first team by senior second baseman Delaney Guerrero and senior catcher Taylor Rawl. Freshman third baseman Sophie Holland and freshman first baseman Baleigh Lunsford earned honorable mention all-region status.
Guerrero led the Lady Demons with a .478 batting average as well as with 43 hits and in runs scored with 37. She added nine doubles and a triple while driving in 13 runs. She also swiped eight bases in nine attempts while finishing with a .948 fielding percentage.
Rawl was second on the team with a .444 batting average while leading the Lady Demons with four triples and nine stole bases (in 10 attempts) and with a .501 on-base percentage as well as with a .678 slugging percentage. Rawl smacked 10 doubles and a home run while driving home 24 runs. She had a .989 fielding percentage.
Holland batted at a .341 clip with 13 doubles and a home run while crossing the plate 25 times and driving in 13 runners. Her lone home run was a two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth which gave the Lady Demons a walk-off 3-1 victory over Hillcrest in the first round of the state 4A playoffs. She finished with a .987 fielding mark at the hot corner.
Lunsford finished fourth on the Lady Demons with a .398 batting average. She led the team with 33 RBI and was third with 39 hits which included five doubles, a triple and a home run. She also had a .500 slugging percentage to go along with a .985 fielding mark.
Bowers, a sophomore, was the 2014 Region 3-AA player of the year. This was his first time being selected to the all-state squad.
Bowers led Robbie Cash’s Knights with a .444 batting average as well as in home runs with nine, 26 runs batted in and just one strikeout in more than 70 plate appearances. He also had four doubles and a triple.
On the mound, the right-hander had a 4-1 record with a save and a team-low 1.78 earned run average. He struck out 58 batters in 31.1 innings of work.
