The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) recently held a dinner to celebrate the mentors and mentees of its Hand in Hand mentoring program. Hand in Hand is made possible by volunteers who donate their time to spend with children from Kershaw County schools. Mentors remain with their mentees throughout their time in the program and encourage them academically.

During the dinner, Hand in Hand Director Margaret Lawhorn recognized the volunteers who contribute to the program.

“We have volunteers from all walks of life, and when someone gives their time to make a difference in the life of a child, I simply say thank you. You have made a difference in lives of so many children, in the three and a half years you have given 11,527 hours,” Lawhorn said.

During the dinner, mentors and parents of children in the program spoke about their involvement with Hand in Hand.

Eleanor Porter, a mentor for a student at Blaney Elementary shared about her experience of her first year in the program,

“It has been an uplifting experience…I am so grateful to all of you for giving us the experience to work together,” Porter said.

Becky Randall has been in the program for two years with her mentee.

“I’ve been very proud; we’ve grown a lot in the last two years. I don’t know what I would do without the program” said Randall.

Those interested in serving as a mentor in the program are encouraged to contact the UWKC at 432-0951.
