Lugoff resident Angela Napoli recently became South Carolina’s first Miss Amazing pageant winner with the title of Sr. Miss Queen.

Miss Amazing is a national pageant for girls and women with disabilities from ages 10 to 35. This was the first year South Carolina hosted such a pageant, held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo.

“I had a good time at the pageant. I won a crown, flowers, a sash and best personality … I’m having a good time,” Angela said of her new title and of being awarded the pageant’s “Amazing Personality” award.

Angela’s mom, Sheri Camp, found out about the Miss Amazing pageant from a friend who thought Angela might be interested in competing.

“We have had fun with this and it’s been so exciting. I never thought that I would be a pageant mom,” Camp said.

On the day of the pageant Andrea was assigned a “Buddy,” volunteer Andrea Pashal, to direct and assist her throughout the day. Angela learned a dance routine for the opening number of the pageant and also had her hair, makeup and nails done by pageant volunteers. She chose to wear a gold gown and red slippers for her formal wear.

“She wore her good-luck Dorothy shoes, like the shoes from the Wizard of Oz. She wanted to wear those because that was good luck for her,” Camp said.

Participants were judged by short interviews by other pageant winners and were asked about their interests and family members.

“It was fun,” Angela said.

Camp is very proud of her daughter, especially considering the difficulties that she has gone through.

“Due to her special needs, Angela has faced several very hard challenges in her life, some being abused and bullying. It is nothing for her to tell a total stranger, ‘God loves you, even if you are good or bad,’ or ‘Have a nice day.’ She sees the good in people, like more of us should. She enjoys being around and talking to children as well as older persons. Last Christmas (she) helped at a Christmas party for the residents of a nursing home. She is definitely an Amazing young woman,” Camp wrote of her daughter.

Angela also enjoys meeting new people and helping them feel welcomed.

“I’m a hugger,” she said.

Angela currently works at the day program at the Kershaw Disabilities and Special Needs Center three days a week. She is very active in her community and participates in PAL Baseball, a baseball league for special needs children and adults in Kershaw County. She also won two ribbons and a medal at this year’s Special Olympics.

Now, Angela and her mother are both working to send her to the national competition this August in Omaha Nebraska. Angela is excited about meeting new friends at the competition. Despite health problems that have left her hospitalized, Camp is working to get her daughter to the competition through fundraisers. Money is needed to pay for travelling expenses, transportation and meals

“It’s going to be so exciting since none of us have ever done any of this before and didn’t think it would ever be possible for Angela,” Camp said.

A GoFundMe account has been created for Angela.

“What anyone gives will be so appreciated. Also please watch for local fundraisers we will be having at local restaurants,” Camp said.
