A three-vehicle crash left I-20 blocked for several hours near the Kershaw/Richland County line Sunday. Lugoff Fire-Rescue Chief Dennis Ray said a Ford Mustang and Dodge pickup truck were traveling westbound on I-20 when they collided. The S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) said the Mustang drove partially off the left side of the road, over-corrected and struck the pickup, causing that driver to lose control, rolling the truck several times. The Mustang then drove underneath an already disabled tractor-trailer truck stopped on the shoulder.

Ray said his department responded to assist along with units from Blaney, Doby’s Mill and Columbia-Richland fire departments. The westbound lanes were completely closed and traffic was diverted onto the eastbound lanes, reducing that part of the highway to only one lane in each direction.

“The majority of the interstate was shut down for the entire incident,” Ray said.

The SCHP said the crash resulted in entrapments and major injuries to five people. Three were flown by helicopter to Palmetto Richland Hospital for trauma, while Kershaw County ambulances transported the other two.
