Some of the region’s top young tennis talent will descend upon Camden this weekend for the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) Junior Championships to be played today through Sunday at the Camden Country Club (ages 12 and up) and the Camden High School (players 10 and under) tennis courts.
The event, which is being sponsored by the City of Camden, will have approximately 100 junior players competing in the “open” tournament. With roughly 90 percent of players coming from outside of Kershaw County, the tourney is expected to bring between 200 to 250 players and family members to Camden. The tournament itself is free and open to spectators.
The USTA sanctioned Level 4-State Tournament is being directed by Kevin Jackson, Director of Tennis and Aquatics at Camden Country Club. Singles and doubles play for all junior age divisions are offered.
“Tennis has always been a big part of the quality of life in Camden,” said Camden Mayor Tony Scully. “And having the USTA Junior Championships in Camden provides one more reason for us to say, ‘look what we do’ in the area of sports and recreation.
“It is also another perfect opportunity for our restaurants, shops and hotels to demonstrate Camden’s classic brand of hospitality, generosity and service to these guests, who we are privileged to have with us this weekend,” Scully added.
