A circuit court judge sentenced a Lexington County man to 20 years in prison Tuesday after the man pleaded guilty in Kershaw County to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 11 and 14.

Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies arrested Jonathan Wayne Goad, of Gilbert, in June 2010, holding him at the Kershaw County Detention Center until his trial. Attorneys made opening statements Monday. The victim took the stand Tuesday and testified for two hours. Afterward, Goad decided to plead guilty as charged.

Judge Robert Hood accepted Goad’s plea, sentencing him to the maximum 20-year sentence, minus 1,448 days already spent in jail. Goad will also be placed on the sex offender registry for the rest of his life, according to Nicole Holland of the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

A Jan. 16, 2010, KCSO report said the victim’s grandmother called authorities after the girl said Goad had abused her starting two years earlier. She said the assaults continued several times during the next year. Goad was not immediately arrested, as he was in jail in Lexington County awaiting trial on a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, the KCSO report said.

Online court records show Goad has previous arrests going back to 1993, including malicious injury to property or animals, resisting arrest, public disorderly conduct, trespassing and fraudulent checks.
