Legion to host fundraiser for Elgin Military Salute

Camden American Legion Post No. 17 will sponsor a Chicken Strip Fundraiser Dinner on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in Blaney Baptist Church’s Fellowship Hall. All proceeds from the dinner will be used to complete construction of the Elgin Military Salute Monument at Potter Community Park.

Elgin Councilwoman Melissa Emmons is the military salute project’s chairperson, working with Post 17 Commander James Rabon and former Post Commander Perry McCoy on the fundraiser.

“Cement work will have to be completed. There is also landscaping, permanent lighting and long term maintenance of the monument. This (fundraiser) will add to what funds we have and will be available for future use,”Emmons said.

The monument will have a light for the American flag and two other lights for each side of the monument.

Emmons said Post 17 approached Elgin about doing the fundraiser.

“They came to us and made the offer of what they would like to do to assist with the monument. They are paying for all of the food, everything that is needed. One hundred percent of the sale of the tickets will go back to monument,” Emmons said.

Emmons said other community organizations, businesses and individuals also contributed significantly to the project.

“The Blaney Fire Department has offered to complete the cement work and to do the permanent lighting,” Emmons said.

Establishing the monument has been underway for the past few months. Community response to the project has resulted in it moving forward.

“I think this has been such a success because of the purpose of the project -- to honor the military. This area has quite a few military families and we have been supportive of them,” Emmons said. “The most emotional part for me was to see the individuals from each (military) branch raise their flags. That’s when it really hit me how wonderful the project was and what it meant to so many people.”

Tickets for the dinner can be purchased at Elgin Town Hall for $7.50 per adult and $4 per child (12 and under). To-go plates will also be available. For more information, email Americanlegion17@truvista.net or Melissa.emmons@townofelginsc.com, or call Elgin Town Hall at 438-2362.
