With the meat of their League III season opening tonight, the Kershaw County American Legion baseball team had a tune-up for the game which will decide their post-season fate last Friday.
In what would cap a two-game week versus out of league foes, Post 17 handed Florence its first loss in nine games by holding off Derick Urquhart’s charges, 12-8, in a game played at Legion Field.
KC (5-3) did most of its damage early in the contest, scoring nine times in the first four frames to jump to a 9-1 lead. The guests scored four runs in the top of the third with the big blow coming off the bat of Blake Serpas who drove a three-run home run over the fence in left.
Tyler Bowers also went deep in this one, belting a two-run blast on a four-RBI night.
Grayson King went the first seven frames for the 17ers, allowing four runs on seven hits while fanning nine batters.
KC led, 12-4, before the hosts made the score more respectable by scoring four times in their final at-bat.
The 17ers banged out a season-best 14 hits on the night with Serpas getting a pair to go along with three RBI while scoring three times. Bowers had two hits while driving in four with Broderick Gaither adding a pair of hits while plating three runs.
KC returns to League III play tonight, taking its 2-1 record into a home game versus a visiting Cheraw squad which is 2-3 in league play. Game two of the series will be in Cheraw on Wednesday with the two sides returning to American Legion Park in Camden for Thursday’s finale. All games will begin at 7 p.m.
