KELLI MURPHY RACED PAST the field in winning the Columbia City Women’s Golf Championship by a whopping 10 strokes at the Spring Valley Country Club.

Carrying a one-shot lead into Thursday’s final round of the Columbia City Women’s Golf Championship, 2014 Lugoff-Elgin High School graduate Kelli Murphy blew the field away by firing a 3-under par 69 on the final day of the tournament to record her record-tying fourth win in the event.
Murphy, who will play golf at Auburn beginning next season, won the tourneyfor the fourth time in five years after having her quest for a four-peat come up short in 2013 when Kathryn Miranda unseated Murphy.
Murphy led Miranda in this year’s 54-hole event, played over the Spring Valley Country Club, by a stroke after the first two days. Murphy opened with a 72 and followed that with a 73 on Wednesday for a two-day 145, a stroke ahead of Miranda, a graduate of and a former player at the College of Charleston.
On Thursday, the 17-year-old Murphy rolled in three birdies on the first nine to start distancing herself from the field. By the time the day was finished and she signed her scorecard with a 69, the Elgin resident had put 10 shots between herself and her nearest competitor. Murphy finished the tourney with a 2-under par 214.
Murphy will attempt to become the first five-time Columbia City Women’s Golf Championship titlist when she competes in next year’s event.
