Marion Ernest 'Doc' Kinard

Funeral services for Marion Ernest “Doc” Kirkland, 79, were held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. David Sturgeon and the Rev. Steve Warren will officiated. The family received friends Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Concord Baptist Church.

Mr. Kirkland passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014. Born in Lugoff, he was a son of the late Arthur Ernest and Janie Perry Kirkland. Mr. Kirkland was a member of Concord Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He retired from DuPont and owned H&J Trucking. Mr. Kirkland was a people person and a founding member of the Possum Breeders. He was an avid Clemson fan and enjoyed farming, construction, and real estate.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary L. McPherson Kirkland; daughter, Rhonda Avant (Drexel) of Lugoff; sons, Marion Ernest Kirkland, Jr. of Florence, A. Timothy Kirkland (Gail) of Lugoff; grandchildren, Jason “J-Bo” Rose (Melissa), Blake Avant (Emily), Matthew Kirkland, Marion E. Kirkland III, Shannon Avant (Alisha); and 3 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Powell and Perry Kirkland; and a sister, Belle Motley.
