Voters head to the polls Tuesday for primary election

As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, election officials reported that voter turnout for primary voting had already surpassed the 2012 primary. Kershaw County Voter Registration Director Rosalind Watson said there was a light turnout overall, but that some precincts had reported more than expected voters.

Watson said some precincts, primarily in the Lugoff and Bethune areas, had called her office asking for more sign-in sheets.

“That means they’ve had at least 200 voters,” she said. “Those are pretty large districts.”

The percentage of registered voters who had been to the poll for Camden Precinct 2, which votes at the voter registration office, was 22 percent at 2 p.m. Watson also said more than 1,500 absentee ballots were cast, far outnumbering 2012.

The polls were open Tuesday until 7 p.m., meaning final results were not available until after press time Tuesday. A full report on voting tallies, interviews with the winners and coverage of the primary will appear in Friday’s edition and on the C-I’s website.
