‘I am one of them’

I am a Green Beret, albeit an older one. I haven’t worn my “Green Sponge” in over 40 years. I am also a Camden resident. When it was announced that my fellow Special Forces Association soldiers would be visiting the Revolutionary War Park (on Thursday) I made certain I would be there. It was a bitter-sweet experience.

The busses pulled up and out stepped a group of senior citizens. It was not what I expected. I couldn’t help but think, “Who are these greybacks from way back? Where are the men who free-falled from 10,000 feet in the middle of the night with 100 pounds of equipment strapped to their backs? Where are the men who ran five miles every day at a seven minute pace? Where are the men who trained, organized, equipped and led foreign rebels in places most of us never heard of? Where are the men that chased down Che Guevara?”

Then I realized, “They are right here and I am one of them.”

(Editor’s note: We will have coverage of the Green Beret’s visit to Camden in Wednesday’s edition of the C-I and on our website.)
