Football, hoops, softball, riding and wrestling camps next up

CAMDEN HIGH GRADUATE and former NFL standout Vonnie Holliday will return home next week for the annual Vonnie Holliday Little Bulldog Football Camp.

Here is the list of youth sports camps in Kershaw County for the week of June 23-27:

Vonnie Holliday/Little Bulldog Football Camp: The camp is sponsored by Vonnie Holliday, a former Camden High School standout, and now-retired 15-year NFL veteran. Holliday brings NFL players to town with him to talk with and instruct the campers. Learn the fundamentals of football and improve your skills in this camp. Daily training sessions will include all aspects of defense and offense. Instructing the camp will be the Camden High football staff and players. No football equipment needed. Campers are asked to wear cleats and bring a water bottle.

Location: Camden High School
Cost: $35
Ages: 7 - 14
Hours: 9a.m. - noon

Lugoff-Elgin Basketball Camp: The primary focus of this camp will be to teach young players basic basketball skills and fundamentals.  The camp participants will also learn the concept of team play.  There will be some scrimmage games and awards for free throw shooting, hustling, sportsmanship and more.  There will be eight-foot goals for younger players.  The camp is instructed by Lugoff-Elgin Varsity girls head coach, Von Duncan, assistant coach, Tressa Dixon and varsity team members.

Ages: 5 - 14 years old
Hours:  9 a.m. - Noon
Cost:  $60 per camper (includes T-shirt)

Lugoff-Elgin Softball Camp: This camp is held at the Lugoff-Elgin High School softball field offered for girls ages six through rising ninth-graders. Beginner through advanced players are welcome.  Daily sessions will include offensive play, base running and hitting.  Directing the camp will be Lugoff-Elgin High School softball coach James Marlow along with members of his coaching staff and Lady Demon players.

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School Softball Field
Ages: Six through rising freshmen
Cost: $50
Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Horse Riding Camp or Lessons: Summer horse camp sessions or lessons are available through the Recreation Department. Linda Klein is the instructor. There are also all levels of classes offered for those who would like to take group or individual lessons. These classes meet one day a week for four weeks and the cost is $100. Participants will become acquainted with the horse through grooming, tacking, and leading in the first level, working their way steadily towards jumping, horse show etiquette, conformation and rules of the show ring in higher levels.
Camp dates: (Beginners) each week beginning May 29 through Aug. 1  (Advanced) week of June 9 -13
Hours:  8:30 a.m. - noon
Location: Voxton Farm in Camden
Cost: $150                                                                                                           
Ages: 6 - 18
Registration: One week in advance through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.
These dates you may attend your choice of 1/2 day camp at $150 a week or all day camp, 8:30-4:30 at $275 a week, or an overnight camp for $375.

L-E wrestling camps: There will be a series of wrestling mini-camps to be held inside the mini-gym at Lugoff-Elgin High School beginning Tuesday, June 17 and ending on Thursday, July 31.
The three-day camps will be run by L-E High School head wrestling coach Peter Hemingway and Lugoff-Elgin Middle School head coach Ted Monroe.
The camps are open to elementary, middle and high school wrestlers of all skill levels. The cost is $50 for one session, $90 for two sessions and $130 for three sessions.
The sessions, which will run from 9 a.m. until noon each day, will run over the following days: June 24-26; July 22-24 and July 29-31. Campers may register at the L-E High mini-gym from 15 to 30 minutes before the start of the camp and should bring workout clothes and wrestling shoes or, tennis shoes for first-time wrestlers.
