Noted and Passed

** The City of Camden has come up with a good interim solution for the former Maxway building site downtown, electing to turn it into a green space at a minimal cost. Having a "mini-park" downtown, where visitors enter from the I-20 interchange, will help spiff up the town and provide an appropriate welcome.

** Lucy Li made history last week in women’s golf as she played in the U. S. Open, the youngest competitor ever to do so. Li impressed her playing partners with her maturity on the course, though she made no secret of her fondness for ice cream, as nearly all kids that age do. It’s hard to imagine a child – and yes, an 11-year-old is a child – being able to qualify for a tournament of that magnitude, and she did herself proud.

** We note that New York City has settled a lawsuit for $40 million in relation to the wrongful conviction nearly 25 years ago of five men in the infamous Central Park jogger case. A woman was badly beaten in that incident, and the five men were railroaded. We are reminded of the 2006 incident in which members of the Duke University lacrosse team were hounded by an unscrupulous prosecutor (who was later disbarred) in a rape case. Justice gone awry is a horrid theme, and unfortunately, happens too often.
