Of luck and love

Romantic comedies tell us that love is often funny. I don’t believe in romantic comedies anymore than I believe in the Easter Bunny, but I do agree that love can be very funny at times … not funny as in laugh so hard you wet your pants, but funny in the sense of leaving you scratching your head and wondering what in the world has just happened to you.

I’ve spent the last year and a half of my life viewing love from a distance, like a kid who can’t swim and sits in a plastic chair a safe distance from the water while his friends splash about and dunk each other and play Marco Polo.

I don’t regret this tactic at all. In fact, I believe it’s been very beneficial for me. During this year and a half dating sabbatical, I’ve come to notice that love does rather interesting and not always attractive things to people.

I’ve seen love make people: needy, happy, sad, silly, depressed, giddy, sour, foolish, submissive, protective and a slew of other mood-depicting adjectives. The list could go on infinitely. The fact is, love has the power to shake everything up in your world that you thought was normal and definite and specified.

Sometimes, it’s very hard to be in love. Sometimes, you love someone who is far away (physically, emotionally, mentally) and, despite your efforts, the distance can’t be bridged. Sometimes, you love someone who may love you back, but simply isn’t ready to commit. And then, the worst of the worst, sometimes you simply love someone who doesn’t love you back. These situations make even the greenest heart feel jaded.

Thankfully, love isn’t always like that. Every now and then, you strike gold. Every now and then, you cross paths with someone who makes your heart hurt with happiness and possibility. This person exhibits the ability to make you laugh, cry and every other good and bad thing in between.

This person is special and you know it from the get-go. His smile increases your pulse rate. His eyes are blue oceans in which you wouldn’t mind drowning. His voice reminds you of every handsome movie star you’ve ever wished would someday be your boyfriend. The crush on the physical is like being burned to ashes and submerged in a torrential flood at the same time.

But there’s more than good looks, and that’s what really gets you in the heart, like a sharp heavy hook that digs deep into your flesh and refuses to let go. You discover that he’s also intelligent and articulate and has good taste in music and literature. You realize he’s well-mannered and conscientious and a kind-hearted, genuine person.

When he asks you questions, he listens to your answers and considers every word you share with him. You can scarcely believe that he’s so interested in your interests. You had almost forgotten how wonderful it feels to be inspired by someone to take a different look or approach to the way you’d been seeing and doing things before.

This kind of experience doesn’t come along every day. Sometimes it takes a very long time, a year … a year and a half, sometimes even longer. This kind of experience is as rare as a four-leaf clover, and some may argue that neither really exist, but not me … not anymore at least. At this point in my life, I believe in luck, and I believe in (at least the possibility of) love.
