The New York City Central Park jogger case involved the assault and rape of a female jogger has stood the test of time.

In April 1989, five juvenile males -- four black and one of Hispanic descent -- were tried and convicted for the crime and served their sentences fully. In 2002, their convictions were vacated when a confessed rapist and murderer confessed to committing the crime alone with his DNA confirming his involvement.

Recently, the five young men who were unjustly convicted made a $40 million settlement from the city of New York.

Thomas Jefferson’s notes on the state of Virginia, 1781, came to mind in part:

“The spirit of the master is abating, that of the slave rising from the dust, his condition mollifying, the way I hope preparing, under the auspices of heaven, for a total emancipation, and that this is disposed, in the order of events, to be with the consent of the masters, rather than by their extirpation.”
