Funeral services celebrating the life of John Robert Speaks, 70, of Camden, were held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Camden. Burial followed in Quaker Cemetery. Reverend Bruce Hancock officiated. The family received friends from 5:30 – 7:30 PM Monday, January 17, 2011 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made in Mr. Speaks’ memory to First Baptist Church of Camden Building Fund, 1201 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Speaks, husband of Nancy West Speaks, died Sunday. January 16, 2011. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late Robert Glenn Speaks and Virginia Fisher Speaks Humphries. Mr. Speaks was retired co-owner of Speaks Oil Company. He was a graduate of Wingate Junior College and a member of First Baptist Church of Camden, where he was a deacon for over 25 years, an active Sunday school teacher, RA leader, Training Union teacher and a member of the Brotherhood Builders. He was also a member of the American Legion Post # 17, past President of the Lions Club, 2 time President of the Bulldog Club. Mr. Speaks was a member of the 1957 baseball and football State Championship teams and the 1958 basketball State Championship team.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are his children and their spouses: Robbie and Amy Speaks of Camden, Chris and Jan Speaks and Michael and Kristi Speaks, all of Simpsonville, Stephen and Rebekah Speaks of Clemson and Staci and Walter Long of Camden; grandchildren: Fraser, Tripp and Maggie Speaks; Ansley, Drew, Hannah and Samantha Speaks, Claire and Wyatt Speaks, Kathryn, Conner and Paul Speaks, Leila, Lizzie and Mac Long; twin brother, Joe and his wife Phyllis Speaks of Camden and brother, Howard and his wife Kaye Speaks of Walterboro. He was pre-deceased by his mother-in-law, Leila Christmas West.
