Horse barn burns, no casualties

A horse barn at Dale Thiel Stables on Firetower Road was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon. Quentin Wilson, an employee of neighboring Roger Young Stables, saw the fire about 1:25 p.m. Sunday and, after making sure no horses were in the barn, ran to the Thiel’s house and told them them about the blaze. Thiel said when he and his wife, Judy, came out of their house, the barn was engulfed in flames. No horses were injured. Thiel said the main loss was straw and aerosol insecticide stored in the barn. Camden Fire Chief Bobby Parnell said investigators would search for the cause of the fire later Sunday afternoon.

Truck carrying uranium overheats its brakes

The Lugoff Fire Department assisted a tractor-trailer carrying 30,000 gross pounds of uranium on Interstate 20 Tuesday afternoon when the truck’s brakes overheated.

The truck, driven by Brannon Otis Johnson, had picked up the uranium from Westinghouse in West Columbia and was bound for Norfolk, Va. The truck is owned by Atlantic Coast Express of Elizabeth, N.J.

Lugoff Fire Department Chief Steve McIntyre said the truck’s brakes overheated and Johnson pulled into the rest area on the eastbound lane of I-20. The department responded to a call at 3:22 p.m. Tuesday and found the driver spraying a fire extinguisher on the brakes.

Firemen set up an exhaust fan to help cool off the tires. Also assisting were Gary Elliott, county fire marshal, and the Camden Fire Department with the hazardous materials van.

The truck was set to go on its way Tuesday afternoon after receiving new brakes and a new tire.

Dill excels on the PGA Seniors Tour

Camden resident Terry Dill, the former city attorney and a regular on the PGA Tour, has returned to the links.

After getting his game back in gear and following his 50th birthday, the one-time Texas Longhorn golfer is back in action. This time he is playing on the PGA Seniors Tour and is enjoying a fine start.

In five tournaments, Dill has made the cut each time and has been near the top of the leader board on each occasion. This past weekend was no exception.

Playing in the Digital Seniors Classic in Boston, Dill fired an opening round 71 and then came back with a 68 before closing with a 67 for a 206 total, which was good for seventh place behind winner Bob Charles, who checked in with a 200 in the 54-hole event.

For his three-day effort, Dill earned $10,000 while bringing his season total to $48,880 after five tournaments. He currently stands at number 41 on the money list, despite getting a late start on the season which began in January.

Beat the summer heat with cucumbers

Frozen Cucumber Pickles

2 qts. Thin sliced, unpeeled cucumbers

1 large onion, sliced

2 tbsp. salt

1-1/2 cup sugar

½ cup vinegar

Sprinkle salt over sliced cucumbers and let stand for 2 hours. Drain off water. Pour sugar and vinegar over pickles, Let stand for 10 minutes. Stir and place cucumbers in containers and freeze. After 2 days, pickles are ready to eat. Thaw to room temperature. After completely thawed, keep in refrigerator.

Stuffed Cucumbers

2 cucumbers

1 cup bread crumbs

¼ cup chopped onion

2 tbsp. milk Salt, pepper


Split cucumbers in half lengthwise. Remove pulp (about 1 cup). Combine pulp with bread crumbs and onion; moisten with milk, season with salt and pepper. Stuff cucumbers with the above mixture; sprinkle with paprika. Place in a greased baking dish and bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Makes 4 servings.
